Careers in Writing is designed to inspire, inform, and connect young writers who are passionate about pursuing careers in the world of writing or seeking further education in literary fields. Hosted by Birmingham City University (BCU) in collaboration with Writing West Midlands (WWM), this event will offer a dynamic mix of 1-2-1 sessions, expert talks, and hands-on workshops, providing participants with the tools, knowledge, and inspiration to advance their writing careers.

1. From Pitch to Publication
Ever wondered how a manuscript becomes a published book? This panel dives into the heart of traditional publishing, offering a closer look at how books are discovered, developed and delivered to readers. From landing an agent to working with an editor, find out what the journey to publication really involves, and how to make your story stand out in a crowded market.

2. Beyond the Book Deal:
There’s more to a career in writing than writing. Learn how creative skills, industry insight and a passion for literature can translate into a wide range of exciting careers that aren’t just about writing your novel.

3. Writing for Performance
Not all writing lives on the page – and some of the most exciting opportunities for writers today happen off it. This panel explores the world of writing for performance, from theatre and film making to writing for audio, spoken word, and poetry. Find out how scripts, soundscapes and stories are brought to life through voice and movement, and how this powerful, often overlooked area of writing could be the start of a creative career you never knew was possible.

Workshops:
Participants will be able to take part in a practical, small-group workshop led by lecturers from BCU’s Creative Writing MA team. These sessions are designed to stretch your creativity and deepen your craft. You’ll be able to choose your preferred workshop on the day.
