IN PERSON One Day Short Course: Starting to Write (Sept 22)

with William Gallagher

Saturday 17 September 2022, 10am – 4pm (lunch not included)

Writing West Midlands office, Zellig, Custard Factory complex, Birmingham

A one-day short course on both the creative and the practical aspects of writing novels, short stories and scripts. You’ll create characters, plan plots and discuss dialogue as you write from scratch or develop work you’ve already begun.

At the same time you’ll learn about what publishers need and why – plus how to juggle your writing alongside all the other commitments in your life.

It’s about how to get started, how to keep going and then how to finish.

This course is open to all abilities, particularly those new to writing, or new to writing prose and scripts. Bring pen, paper, laptop or tablet to write on and we’ll spend a lunch hour chatting about our writing so it might be an idea to bring a sandwich too.

Biography:

William Gallagher is a writer of prose and scripts. He’s Deputy Chair of the Writers’ Guild, writes Doctor Who radio dramas and is the author of 19 non-fiction books including the British Film Institute’s BFI TV Classics: The Beiderbecke Affair. His first collection of short stories is due to be published in 2023.

Details:

The workshop will take place in person, at the Writing West Midlands offices at Zellig building, Custard Factory complex, Gibb Street, Birmingham.

Places will be limited to 10.

The space is large, and will be well ventilated.

An online alternative to this in-person workshop is also available. Please book that online version if you would feel more comfortable. See all courses available at: https://writingwestmidlands.org/upcoming-events/

Short courses 2022:

We are running a mix of short courses and workshops online and in person, so you can choose to attend the session you are the most comfortable with.

We understand that not all writers are able to pay for their writing courses to further their career, and we run a Bursary Scheme as a consequence. If you feel you need a bursary, please contact us: info@writingwestmidlands.org.

Please note: you must sign up for the full course even if you cannot attend all dates. No partial course ticket is available.

Short Courses are for over 18s. If you are a young writer, you can sign up for our Spark Young Writers Programme.

All Writing West Midlands short courses are collaborative, and you will learn as much from your fellow course attendees as from the tutor. You will be expected to play an active role in group tasks, and you will also have time to reflect on your own writing during sessions.

Course handouts are sometimes (but not always) available, and notes may be available in advance upon request. If you have any additional needs, please contact Writing West Midlands in advance of the course starting and we will try to assist you.
