Short Course: Creative Writing for Personal Development
It is only in being creative that the individual discovers the self – DW Winnicott
A short course exploring life and what makes us human through writing and creativity. You’ll be guided through a series of writing exercises, with plenty of time for reflection and sharing your work with others.
Mandy Ross is a writer, poet, and a trainee psychotherapist. She brings together her pleasure in writing with a playful approach to exploring and making.
Over this 5-session short course, we’ll use poetry and stories from around the world as starting points. Themes will include beginnings, journeys, love, identity and belonging, challenge, humour and curiosity.
No prior writing experience is necessary. You can be writing in any genre.
Biography:
Mandy Ross uses writing as a spark to gather voices and stories in Birmingham’s urban mix. Drawing on the city’s superdiversity, in a residency for Birmingham Cathedral, in interfaith groups, with cancer patients, mental health service users, children and adults, she weaves together threads of individual stories and histories.
Mandy has written over 60 children’s books as well as plays and work for adults. As one half of Secret City Arts, she works with storytellers, musicians, photographers and filmmakers to bring words off the page. She is currently undertaking an MSc in integrative psychotherapy at Newman University.
Course dates:
Wednesdays, 6.30pm to 8.30pm, on 16 January 2019, 23 January, 30 January, 6 February and 13 February.
Please note: you must sign up for the full course even if you cannot attend all dates. No partial course ticket is available.
Short Courses are for over 18s. If you are a young writer, you can sign up for our Spark Young Writers Programme.
All Writing West Midlands short courses are collaborative, and you will learn as much from your fellow course attendees as from the tutor. You will be expected to play an active role in group tasks, and you will also have time to reflect on your own writing during sessions.
Course handouts are sometimes (but not always) available, and notes may be available in advance upon request. If you have any additional needs, please contact Writing West Midlands in advance of the course starting and we will try to assist you.
